Take this Subject Spotlight to...

In this fascinating and intriguing Subject Spotlight, Assistant Professor Edward Mowlam and Dr Gareth Addidle present Modern slavery: County Lines Drug Trading in the UK, a topic prevalent on both the Law LLB and BA (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Behaviour courses. Edward begins by outlining what constitutes Modern Slavery, the history of slavery, and why important legislation has been introduced in a contemporary society to prevent the exploitation of humans. He goes on to introduce a form of modern slavery known as county lines, and what it encompasses. Edward also looks at the specifics of legislation that tries to combat county lines crimes, as well as the offences and defences involved in county lines. Dr Gareth Addidle then puts a more criminological spin on the Spotlight by presenting a case study which focuses on the TV Series ‘Top Boy’, and reflecting on its accuracy and impact on the issue of county lines, focussing on the importance of education surrounding the prevention of Modern Slavery. He closes the Spotlight by discussing some important terminology regarding social harm, questioning whether the law can keep up with new crimes and get ahead, before finally setting you an activity that examines three potential victims of Modern Slavery.
