Course summary

Become a nurse with MNurs Nursing (Child and Mental Health) at the University of Southampton, a course ranked 3rd in the UK and 13th in the world (QS World Rankings by Subject 2026), to shape the future of healthcare and be there when it matters.

On your four-year integrated master's degree you'll learn how to improve the quality of life for young service users and patients with complex mental health issues. This programme will also prepare you to work in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) through an extensive range of placements, simulated practice in our specialist facilities, and clinical skills teaching by world-class educators and practitioners.

To prepare you for your future role, the programme will help you to:

  • develop skills in assessment, decision-making and managing complexity across a range of healthcare environments

  • understand the nature of health needs within a global context

  • become confident in embracing the technology and innovation that will be needed to meet people's future health needs

  • prepare for a future nursing leadership role in clinical or academic settings

You'll graduate from this course with the opportunity to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse (Child) and as a Registered Nurse (Mental Health).

Assessment method

Throughout your degree you'll be supported to achieve your best in assessments by our vibrant Health Sciences community, your Personal Academic Tutor, and your Practice Mentor.

Assessments on this programme range from coursework, written and practical exams to projects. Assessment takes place throughout the course to ensure that you are reaching the right levels of attainment. Your practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your Practice Mentor.

Pass in a science or health based Access to HE with 60 credits overall, and with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, of which 24 must be at Distinction and 21 credits at Merit.

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

Pass with 30 points overall with 15 points at Higher Level. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered. Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. Applicants may also be asked to achieve a specific grade in those elements. Health or Healthcare Science – An overall Merit with grade B in the core element and Merit in Supporting the Nursing Team Specialism

GCSEs: Minimum of GCSE Maths and English Language (A*-C or 4-9). GCSE Science (A*-C or 4-9) also required if not offered as a level 3 qualification. Certain GCSE equivalent qualifications will be considered.

FETAC / QQI Level 5 120 Credits: Pass in every module, with distinction essential in at least 5 modules including Human Growth and Development (or Biology), Anatomy and Physiology and Nursing Theory.

Recent relevant study must have been taken within the last 5 years.

You may be required to attend a selection day. Satisfactory Occupational Health and Police Checks required.
