Course summary

This degree combines the study of linguistics with German, to explore how language works and what it does. You spend two thirds of your time concentrating on the structure, history and sociological aspects of the English language. The remaining third is devoted to studying German language and culture. You will spend a year abroad in Stage 3, working or studying in a German-speaking country.

Including German. Candidates with AS level German (minimum grade B) will also be considered. Not including General Studies.

We particularly encourage applicants with some qualifications in mathematical and/or scientific fields. As the course contains a combination of scientific thinking, language skills, and mathematical reasoning, it may be especially suited to the personality of students who have enjoyed both mathematics/science and arts/humanities subjects.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

Access to HE Diploma D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

To include 15 level 3 credits in German, or evidence of studying the language to the required level alongside it.

Scottish Higher AABBB

Including German. Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 32 points

With grade 5 in German at Higher Level.

Candidates who have some background in Maths and Science may be interested in the cognitive/brain science and quantitative elements of the course. Candidates who prefer Arts and Humanities subjects may be interested in the historical, sociological, and literary elements of the course.

Extended Project

If you offer the Level 3 Extended Project Qualification in a topic relevant to the degree programme, we may take this into account in our consideration of your application.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) H1, H2, H2, H3, H3

To include German at minimum Grade H2.
