Course summary

On this three-year course you'll gain a comprehensive knowledge of audiology and the clinical and professional skills needed to become an audiology healthcare professional. You’ll develop essential academic, professional and employability skills and receive clinical training from day one. You'll learn from practising clinicians and researchers at the cutting edge of audiology, at the only UK university with in-house audiology and auditory implant services. Throughout the course, you'll attend practical sessions in our dedicated skills laboratory, consolidating your skills during a 27-week placement, which starts at the end of year two and continues into year three.

We'll help you to prepare for your career, supporting you to work on a clinical training portfolio and a professional development portfolio that will stay with you throughout your working life. You'll also have the opportunity to meet representatives from the NHS, the private and charity sectors, and cochlear implant and hearing aid companies at our annual employability careers event.

Modules

Typical modules include:
Year One: An Introduction to Professional Practice, Audiology Clinical Placement I, Biopsychosocial Basis of Audiology, Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology I, Introduction to Hearing Science and Technology.

Year Two: Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology II, Audiology Clinical Placement II, Facilitating Effective Auditory Rehabilitation I & II, Two optional modules from across the University.

Year Three: Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology III, Audiology Clinical Placement III, Individual Project, plus optional modules from across the University.

Assessment method

A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. These include written examinations and assessments, oral presentations, individual and group work projects, Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), an Individual Record of Clinical Practice (IRCP) and Professional Development Portfolio (PDP).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

The BTEC entry requirements for this course will be changing for 2024 entry. We are hoping to update this page for 2024 entry at the end of May.

Access to HE Diploma D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit.

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Scottish Advanced Higher

Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 32 points

Pass, with 32 points overall with 16 points required at Higher Level including a minimum of 5 at Higher Level in a science-related subject.

Accepted science subjects include biology, chemistry, mathematics (Analysis and Approaches at grade 5 or Applications and Interpretation at grade 6), physics and psychology. Applications where Higher Level subjects have been studied without the full Diploma, will also be considered on a case by case basis.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal D3, M2, M2

D3 M2 M2 in three Principal subjects including one science subject

Accepted science subjects include biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and psychology. Cambridge Pre-U's can be used in combination with other qualifications such as A levels to achieve the equivalent of the typical offer, where D2 can be used in lieu of A-level grade A* or grade D3 can be used in lieu of A-level grade A.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)

All applicants must pass a selection task assessing communication skills, values and knowledge of healthcare.

Satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (i.e. satisfactory criminal record check) and Occupational Health Check also required.

Additional entry requirements

Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)
All applicants will be required to complete mandatory criminal record check at the start of the course.
Health checks
All applicants are required to complete mandatory occupational health checks before the start of the course. Consequently, all offers are conditional on a satisfactory outcome of the health checks.
Interview
Applicants are required to attend a visit day at the University for a Selection Task. The task is a group activity in which the applicants will discuss a professional or healthcare issue that is presented on the day. Applicants will be shown the assessment criteria beforehand. Applicants are scored by at least two members of the Admissions Team and may be rejected at this stage if they do not achieve at least ‘satisfactory’ in all dimensions. Applicants will be assessed on their professionalism, understanding of putting patients and families first, personal values and team working skills. Applicants must prove during the selection task they have the interpersonal and communication skills required to enter a healthcare profession. A basic understanding of the important attributes and general requirements of a healthcare professional must also be demonstrated during the selection task.
