Course summary

"You’ll study maths in depth, working with leading researchers who’ll introduce you to pure and applied maths. Learn advanced mathematical and statistical concepts, covering topics from cryptography to black holes. You’ll graduate with the technical skills sought after by employers in finance, commerce, industry and research.

The first 3 years of this degree are similar to both the Mathematics and the Mathematics with Statistics courses, covering:

Algebra – Calculus - Number theory – Statistics - Mathematical modelling

In the fourth year, you’ll study advanced concepts such as representation theory, harmonic analysis, advanced general relativity or Lie groups.

There is also an MMath Mathematics with Statistics pathway available as part of this programme. Following the Statistics pathway you could study topics such as machine learning, survival analysis and other modern applications of statistics.

As part of this course you’ll:

  • Study advanced research methods in algebra, analysis, geometry and topology

  • Have the option to specialise in statistics

  • Undertake an individual research project in a field of your choice

  • Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students

  • Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R'

You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design.

If you’d prefer a more general approach, or you’d like to focus on a different specialism, you can choose from our other pathways."

Modules

The first three years of the course are similar to the BSc Mathematics programme, but in the fourth year you will have a much more prominent part in the direction of your studies and it will involve studying challenging Masters level mathematics. You will undertake an individually supervised project on a topic, which you can choose, and several of the lecture courses involve directed self-study and reading involving such topics as hyperbolic geometry, differential geometry, asymptotics and continuum mechanics. The final year as a whole will equip you with many of the skills you need in a career as a professional mathematician.

Please see the course page online for a list of core and optional modules: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/mathematics-degree-mmath#modules

Assessment method

You will be assessed in a variety of ways such as coursework, tests and exams, enabling you to demonstrate your strengths and show what you have learnt.

A level AAA

Typical Offer: AAA or AABB including Mathematics (grade A)

If you are taking an EPQ in addition to 3 A levels, you will receive the following offer in addition to the standard A-level offer: AAB including Mathematics (grade A) plus grade A in the EPQ

Offers typically exclude General Studies, Use of Mathematics and Critical Thinking.

If STEP is taken alongside three A-levels then the offer will be AAB including grade A in Mathematics and grade 2 in STEP.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) DDD

DDD in the BTEC National Extended Diploma plus A in A level Mathematics

Access to HE Diploma D: 45 credits

Typical offer: 60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3, all of which must be at Distinction

Mathematics must be studied to level 3, A-level standard to be considered

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"
