Course summary

Mathematics with an Integrated Foundation Year is a one year programme designed to improve your mathematical and scientific understanding and skills to a level where you will be able to start a degree in the Department of Mathematics in one of the following subject areas:

  • Mathematics, BSc

  • Mathematics and Philosophy, BSc

  • Mathematics and Physics, BSc

  • Mathematics and Statistics, BSc

  • Mathematics with a Modern Language, BSc

  • Mathematics with Finance, BSc

  • Mathematics with Financial Mathematics, BSc

On the Foundation Year you will study mathematics, physics and chemistry. In addition, you will take modules in Academic Skills and ICT (Information and Communications Technology). You will also complete a group project, related to your intended degree programme and supervised by an academic from your future Department.

Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore there will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A-level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offers you will receive.

Access to HE Diploma

Each application is considered individually. Applicants should contact the Admissions Office to discuss their particular circumstances.
We normally require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 (10 hour) credits) with at least 45 at level 3 and the remainder at level 2.

Specific grades in specific subjects will be part of the offer.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 33 points

33 points overall with 6,5,5 at Higher Level, including at least one from Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry and Mathematics at Standard Level if not studying at Higher Level.

For this programme of study we will accept either Mathematics: analysis and approaches or Mathematics: applications and interpretation at SL or HL.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate and usually requires two A Levels or equivalent to be included within this. The minimum grade required will normally be the same as the lowest grade listed in the A Level entry requirements.

Extended Project

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Departments may also chose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Cambridge Pre-U Global Perspectives and Research (GPR) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. However, the qualification will not form part of your offer conditions.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade C/4 in GCSE/iGCSE English Language and Grade B/6 in GCSE/iGCSE Mathematics if not studied at A-level and at least Grade B/6 from one of GCSE/iGCSE Physics, Chemistry or Combined Science if not studied at A-level.

GCSE/iGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/iGCSE English Language.

English language requirements

All applicants to the University (from the UK and overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency. The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either: - GCSE/iGCSE English Language grade 4/C - IELTS 6.0 overall with no sub-skill below 5.5 - TOEFL iBT 80 overall with no less than 20 in speaking and 18 in all other subscores. We do not accept TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. - An acceptable equivalent qualification Where specified, we also require grade 1 or 2 in the Oral Exam component of the iGCSE English Language (first or second language) qualification. Please note international students would require a UKVI IELTS, if the Foundation Year is taken as a stand-alone qualification.
