Mechatronic Engineering

Mechatronic engineering combines electrical and mechanical engineering to find solutions for systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control.

Our four-year MEng Mechatronic Engineering degree builds on our BEng programme and has been specifically designed to meet the increasing demand from industry for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills in the field of robotics, flexible manufacturing, electromechanical power systems and electrical power transmission and distribution systems. You’ll investigate the problems of combining microelectronics, electrical and mechanical components into electromechanical devices or systems such as micro-machines, electric vehicles and industrial robots.

We have an unrivalled reputation for our facilities, and have recently invested £8m in our teaching labs. We also have a £100m state-of-the-art interdisciplinary clean room complex and high-voltage laboratory.

You’ll be prepared by renowned teaching staff to work in a wide variety of areas and fields; we have strong relationships with employers, and our graduates are in demand for their understanding of organisations and their practical abilities in the workplace. You’ll benefit from our own Careers Hub who run an annual careers fair and our dedicated startup incubator, Future Worlds, supporting student enterprise.

Our MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering degrees are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and meet academic requirements for registering as a Chartered Engineer. We are also members of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UK-ESF) and IET Power Academy.

This four-year MEng programme has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your own interests.

During the first two years you will undertake a series of core modules, for example Circuits, Electronic Systems, Programming, Digital Systems and Devices, Fields, Forces and Materials, and Mathematics.

In your third and fourth years you can choose from a wide range of optional modules that reflect the specialist areas of electronic engineering that will take you to the leading edge of technology sought by industry. You will also work on an individual project with one of our research groups which will allow you to work at the frontier of knowledge. This programme can also be offered with a year in industry.

A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. These include written examinations and assessments, in-class tests, design exercises, programming exercises, oral presentations, assessed laboratories and group work exercises.
