Course summary

The fashion media landscape is constantly evolving, and with our BA (Hons) Fashion Communication & Styling degree you’ll learn the essential skills needed for a successful career in fashion media or styling. You’ll develop the aesthetic and technical skills as well as the theoretical knowledge needed to create engaging communications for the fashion industry. This course has been created in collaboration with industry to give students the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.

Through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and projects, you’ll develop the essential aesthetic, technical and communication skills required to start a career in fashion styling, PR, art direction or content creation.

You will:

  • Learn the technical skills needed to create engaging and exciting fashion-focused communications strategies

  • Be assigned a personal industry mentor to work with throughout the course

  • Develop the technical, research, creative and analytical skills needed for an image and communications-driven role

  • Understand how to draw on cultural influences to create inspiring visual media

  • Discover how live social channels have disrupted the fashion industry and changed the future of media broadcasting

  • Work on live projects and complete work placements with our industry partners

  • Complete a self-directed Personal Professional Project that allows you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge

Industry Enrichment

We work with over 140 brands at the FRA. Our courses include practical, industry-focused content taught by some of fashion’s biggest names to give you valuable skills and work experience.

Industry enrichment opportunities include:

Industry mentorship scheme: Work with your own dedicated industry mentor throughout your course. You’ll meet a minimum of once a term, and they’ll be there to support and guide you.

Work placements: You’ll have a work placement with one of our brand partners each year. In the first year of your undergraduate degree, you’ll complete a three-week work placement. In your second year, your work placement will be either 3 weeks full time or two days a week over 3 months.

Talks, masterclasses and live industry projects: Attend talks and masterclasses led by some of the top names in fashion and retail, and complete projects set by industry partners who will give you feedback and advice.

Modules

Throughout the course you’ll develop the technical, analytical and creative skills needed for a career in fashion communications and styling and develop your understanding of fashion theory and storytelling. You’ll learn through a mix of classes and lectures, individual study, creative projects, and industry enrichment that is integrated throughout the course in the form of masterclasses, live projects, mentorship schemes and work placements.

Year One

The first year of study is focused on developing your understanding of the fashion image landscape and how you can use cultural influences to create exciting content for brands. You’ll also learn the components you need for a strong, persuasive message. You’ll build your knowledge of creative fashion styling from both a theoretical and practical perspective, as well as develop an understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Year Two

In your second year of study, you’ll learn about the requirements of moving images for the fashion industry, product styling and how to create e-commerce imagery, as well as about the global fashion market and how to analyse consumer behaviour. You’ll undertake an individualised project that allows you to showcase your professional knowledge and skills. For the live project you’ll work with a brand, focusing on fashion innovation.

Assessment method

This course is assessed via 100% coursework. The assessment tools include, but aren’t limited to, professionally relevant projects, essays and presentations.

You will complete work placements as part of the course.

Entry requirements

UCAS Tariff 104 - 120 points

A typical offer is between 104 and 120 UCAS points for entry to undergraduate courses, primarily from Level 3 equivalent qualifications such as A levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma or a Foundation Diploma. Due to the creative nature of our courses, you will be considered on your own individual merit and potential to succeed. We encourage you to get in touch if you are predicted points below this range, thinking about transferring from another institution, or if you have other qualifications or professional experience as we may be able to consider you. If English is not your first language, we accept a range of recognised language qualifications that are equivalent to the IELTS Academic minimum score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you must take an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) to fulfil government visa requirements.

We may consider a standalone AS in a relevant subject, if it is taken along with other A Levels and if an A Level has not been taken in the same subject. However, you will not be disadvantaged if you do not have a standalone AS subject as we will not ordinarily use them in our offers.
