What you will study
All our economics students follow the same first year in order to build a solid foundation on which to specialise. This means you can choose to transfer to the BSc in Business Economics and Data Analytics, Economics and Finance, or Economics from your second year, or continue with the Economics and Mathematics BSc.

All our programmes include two compulsory employability modules where you will obtain advice and feedback on CV and cover letter-writing, and how to prepare for an interview. You will also be encouraged to think about what kind of career you wish to pursue and how to start working towards your future goals.

The first-year modules are designed to provide you with a broad range of basic tools, skills and knowledge that you will develop during your programme. You will study introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics as well as a wide range of mathematics modules to develop a robust understanding and knowledge of economic theory and quantitative skills.

In the second year, the programme will become more specialised. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics modules at a more advanced level; these modules will be complemented by further mathematic modules to strengthen and solidify your quantitative skill set towards one that provides a distinct edge for a technical and quantitative-heavy job role in the future.

We offer a long list of specialised economics modules, some of which are more technical than others, all taught by lecturers conducting research in various fields in economics. In your final year, you will be able to choose four economics modules to study more quantitatively-orientated modules or explore other specialised fields (e.g. finance, international trade) in economics. You will also be able to select four mathematics modules to gain a more advanced, and highly specialised quantitative skill set.

Overall: ABB. Required subjects: Mathematics at Grade A. Applicants taking an A level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass the practical element. We do not include General Studies or Critical Thinking in our offers.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) DDD

Overall: DDD and A-level Mathematics grade A. Required subjects: A-level Mathematics grade A.

Access to HE Diploma D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

Overall: QAA recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma with 45 Level 3 credits overall including 30 at Distinction, 15 at Merit, and an additional A-level Mathematics grade A. Required subjects: A-level Mathematics grade A.

Scottish Higher AABBB

Overall: AABBB Required subjects: Mathematics grade A. GCSE or Equivalent: English Language: Scottish National 5 - C. Maths:Scottish National 5 - A. Applicants must have achieved the Scottish national grades at the time of making their application.

Scottish Advanced Higher ABB

Overall: ABB Required subjects: Mathematics grade A. GCSE or Equivalent: English Language: Scottish National 5 - C. Maths:Scottish National 5 - A. Applicants must have achieved the Scottish national grades at the time of making their application.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 33 points

Overall: 33. Required subjects: Maths Analysis and Approaches HL6/SL7 or Maths Applications and Interpretation HL6. GCSE or Equivalent: English A HL4/SL4 or English B HL5/SL6.

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales

Overall: Pass overall with ABB from a combination of the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales and two A-levels. Required subjects: A-level Mathematics grade A. Please note: A-level General Studies and A-level Critical Thinking are not accepted. Applicants taking an A-level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are expected to pass the practical element. GCSE or equivalent: Please check the A-level drop down for the required GCSE levels.

Extended Project A

Applicants taking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) will receive our standard A-level offer for this programme, plus an alternate offer of one A-level grade lower, subject to achieving an A grade in the EPQ. The one grade reduction will not apply to any required subjects. Applicants can only receive one grade reduction from the published grades, an EPQ grade reduction can’t be applied in addition to other grade reductions made through other schemes such as Contextual Admissions or In2Surrey.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE or equivalent: English Language at Grade 4 (C). Applicants must have achieved these grades at the time of making their application.

Applications are considered on an individual basis, taking into account qualifications achieved, predicted grades, personal statement and academic reference. Conditional offers are specified in terms of required grades; we do not make offers in terms of overall UCAS tariff.

We understand that predicted grades are an estimate and will consider applicants who have predicted grades that are a little lower than our published requirement. Any offers we make will align with the grades shown above unless a grade reduction can be offered under our Contextual Admissions policy or our In2Surrey scheme.
