Statistical releases – daily Clearing analysis 2020 | Undergraduate | UCAS

Statistical releases produced on 4 August, then each weekday between 13 August – 4 September 2020 and on day 28 (published on 24 September), providing core numbers for the current cycle, comparison data over ten cycles, and graphical illustrations of key trends.

On SQA results day, there are 8 categories of analysis: age, applicant status, country of provider, domicile, gender, SIMD 2012/2016, subject group (HECoS), and subject group (JACS), as well as nursing breakdowns.

From JCQ results day, there are 16 categories of analysis per day: age, applicant status, country of provider, deferrals, domicile, ethnic group, gender, IMD 2019, NIMDM 2017, SIMD 2012/2016, WIMD 2014, POLAR4, subject group (HECoS), subject group (JACS), tariff group of provider, and UK region, as well as nursing breakdowns.

From one day after JCQ results day, there is additional analysis of daily net change in applicants and nursing applicants.

Nursing

For this cycle, we will continue to produce a subset of the reports for nursing courses (in subject group 'B7'). These reports include those who are placed at a 'B7' nursing course, as well as those who have made at least one choice to a 'B7' nursing course, and are not placed elsewhere.

Scope of provision

In Scotland, there is a substantial section of provision that is not included in UCAS' figures. This is mostly full-time higher education provided in further education colleges, which represents around one third of young full-time undergraduate study in Scotland. This proportion varies by geography and background within Scotland. Accordingly, the statistics on UCAS acceptances in these data resources reflect only that majority of full-time undergraduate study that uses UCAS.

Teacher training

From the 2015 cycle onwards, applications to postgraduate teacher training programmes in Scotland were included in the UCAS Undergraduate admissions scheme – previously, these were recruited through UCAS Teacher Training. The numbers for providers in Scotland from 2015 onwards recorded through the UCAS Undergraduate scheme include those which were previously part of UCAS Teacher Training. In 2015, around 120 courses at providers in Scotland moved into the UCAS Undergraduate scheme, and it is estimated to be around 2,000 acceptances, mostly aged 21 or over.

Applicant status assignment

The applicant status Placed (Clearing) is assigned irrespective of whether the course was one of the applicant's original firm or insurance choices. In 2020, due to the re-award of qualifications, more main scheme applicants classified as Placed (Clearing) have used Clearing as the means by which they are now accepted at their firm or insurance choice.

Gibraltar

Gibraltar has been classified as EU (excluding the UK) in this release. This has resulted in a small overreporting of EU (excluding UK) figures, and a small underreporting of Not EU figures.

Population estimates

18 year old population estimates have been added to the data file for 10 September.

On SQA results day, IMD data for applicants domiciled in England refers to IMD 2015. From JCQ results day onwards, IMD data for applicants domiciled in England refers to IMD 2019.
